Beware!!!! Bush Meat Lovers

The fact that almost every Nigerian loves Bush Meat is an understatement. Africans generally love bush meat and if given the chance to eat it everyday they will gladly embrace it. According to  a report by Channels Television, there is a Virus in town which has been largely associated with Bush Meat which causes the initial infection when eaten or when there is contact with infected body fluid that contains the Virus. The virus is called Ebola Virus. Ebola virus was originally discovered in the Democratic Republic of  Congo in 1976. These virus causes Ebola Hemorrhagic  Fever(EBH). Now I did some digging on the cure and all I found out was that there is no Cure" For Now". The virus has crossed borders and is now in Nigeria. Tell you Fun Loving friends, family to avoid Bush meat "For Now" until World Health Organisation declares Ebola Virus free.
Prevention is better than Cure.

Yes today April 25,2014 is World Malaria Day

World Malaria Day is a day to recognise the global effort to control malaria.  Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The parasite is transmitted from one person to another by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito which requires blood to nurture her eggs. Each year, Roll Back Malaria partner organisations unite around a World Malaria theme. Defeat malaria is a three year theme partners chose for the period  of 2013-2015 to call attention to the need to reach the 2015 Millennium Development Goals and defeat malaria in the future.
Statistical Facts
- One million people die each year from malaria
- 1 in 5 childhood deaths are caused by malaria
- 10000 pregnant women and 200000 infants die from malaria in Africa.
- Malaria costs Africa more than 12billion dollars in lost GDP every year.
- Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria in Africa.
- 90% of all malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

I even remember a neighbour of mine who died from malaria. So we should not underestimate the harm that malaria causes. Malaria Kills. Sleeping under an insecticide treated net(ITN) is the most effective proven method  of preventing malaria. Clean your surroundings, stale water, gutter etc.
I want to also appreciate EXXON MOBIL who funds these project implemented by Africare/Nigeria. Big Ups.

Beware mouthwash can cause Oral Cancer

Three Mouthwash Bottles - stock photoClose-up Of Person's Hand Pouring Liquid In Container - stock photo
Enter any upscale pharmacy and what you are likely to see on the front desk are bottles of assorted mouthwash with detailed explanation on how to use them. Of course, dental health specialists prescribe them when necessary and like other medications are meant to be used under the supervision of a physician. A dentist  Dr Mabel Philips says use of mouthwash indefinitely can do more harm than good. Yes your breath feels fresh after usage but trust me. in few minutes of hours the bacteria returns. Most mouthwashes contain alcohol and dries your mouth and makes it conducive for bacteria to thrive. Again ,alcohol and smoking has been linked to Oral Cancer. Mouthwashes containing alcohol increases the risk of developing Oral Cancer when used regularly. "Mouthwash is also a drug medication".
The bottom line is "If you have to use mouthwash regularly then there is a problem visit a Dentist. And if you must use mouthwash sparingly, it must be under the supervision of a  competent physician.

This is for the Ladies!!!!!

Lets set the record straight Shampooing of the hair is  done at least once in a month or two  by ladies.  Some ladies use shampoo because they feel it is good for their hair or because it working better for someone else but are not conscious of the fact that as a lady the perfect shampoo should be used for maximum benefit. So  Ladies
-  Its important to choose the right kind of Shampoo because if you have a very thick hair moisturizing shampoo is best for you whereas if you have a fine hair volumizing shampoo is best for you.
-  If your hair feels unusually dry, no longer responding to products or you notice residue building up on your scalp, wash with clarifying shampoo to get rid of these problems.
- You have Blonde hair or chemically treated hair, you should use clarifying shampoo frequently
- Shampoos generally have 2 to 3 years Shelf Life and shampoos don't go bad even after the expiration date but it wont work as well as a newer shampoo.
- Massaging Shampoo into your scalp can promote healthy hair.
- Water temperature is really important because washing your hair with hot water will leave you with limp, lifeless hair.
- Dry Shampoo  works best at night.
- You can make Shampoo yourself by combining Baking Soda, vinegar and water to create shampoo that will eliminate smells  without some of the harsh chemicals found in store-bought shampoos.

Risk factors you cannot change

Risk factors you cannot change

Gender

Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for developing breast cancer. Men can develop breast cancer, but this disease is about 100 times more common among women than men. This is probably because men have less of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which can promote  cancer cell growth.

Aging

Your risk of developing  cancer increases as you get older. About 1 out of 8 invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45, while about 2 of 3 invasive breast cancers are found in women age 55 or older.

Genetic risk factors

About 5% to 10% of  cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects (called mutations) inherited from a parent.

Happy Easter Guys

I am wishing and celebrating with everyone on these auspicious occasion of Easter Celebration. We will all celebrate more years In Jesus Name Amen.

IT HAS TO STOP

Its so so alarming, irritating and disgusting on how so many things are going wrong in the country. Yes, personally i find it annoying that a normal human being wakes up in the morning and all he/she thinks of is evil to kill, steal , destroy lives of young  people. I personally have been to the North. From what i know, seen and heard of, the North is very peaceful not until the dreaded killings and bombing has turned the north to a war zone. Then it was the South South  but now its the North East. I strongly condemn the killings which happened at the Nyanya Motor Park on the 15th of April. Its absurd these are innocent lives ,breadwinners of families wasted in their prime. These has to stop.  We all must help the Government to stop these ruthless operations.

Operation IT HAS TO STOP.

World Health Day- April 7

April 7 was World Health Day  people all around the world die due to vector borne diseases. Focusing mainly on the increasing threat of viral and parasitic infections caused by insects, this year’s World Health Day (April 7) highlights ‘Prevention of vector borne diseases.
Vector borne diseases are diseases caused by pathogens that are transmitted to humans through insects and ticks carrying the pathogen. They are difficult to prevent because of several challenges facing the control of vectors and transmissibility of the pathogens. Here are top 10 vector borne diseases that contribute to increased morbidity and mortality:
- Lyme disease : Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans by black-legged ticks that are infected with the bacteria. Upon entry, the bacterium attacks the central nervous system and causes neurological problems.
- Malaria : The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium.
- Dengue : Dengue is caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans by the vector Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
- Filariasis : Filariasis is caused by thread like filarial worms or nematodes. Wuchereria bancrofti is the most common filarial worm, causing the disease in 90 percent of the cases. The worm is carried by and transmitted to humans by mosquitoes –mainly Culex mosquito. The worm invades the lymphatic system causing profuse selling mainly in the legs.
- Chickungunya : It is caused by a virus classified under the family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus. It is transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquito (mainly Aedes aegypti) in the daytime.
- Kala Azar : It is caused by protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania.
- Plague : It is a deadly disease caused by the bacteria Yersina pestis.
- Chagas’ Disease is widely found in communities of Latin America. It is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by a large insect called ‘kissing bug’
- Yellow fever : yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease. The disease is caused by the yellow fever virus and spread by female mosquito of Aedes aegypti species. The virus affects the cells of the immune system and causes symptoms like fever, chills, nausea and muscle pain.
Encephalitis: It is a viral disease that is spread through infected Culex mosquito. The virus mainly affects the central nervous system and causes headache, fever, meningitis, coma, tremors, paralysis and loss of coordination. Several cases of the disease have been found in India. The most affected states include Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kera.

Causes and Solutions of Emotional hunger

Common causes of Emotional Hunger

- Stress : Do you know that stress can make you hungry. Have you ever noticed ? When stress is high, it stimulates production of high level of stress hormone Cortisol. Cortisol triggers the crave for  salty, sweet and high foods. The more uncontrolled stress in your life, the more you are likely to turn food for emotional relief. Pattern your stress life so it does not weigh you down.
-  Stuffing emotions : Uncomfortable emotions including fear, anger, sadness, loneliness can trigger your emotional hunger. Avoid stuffing emotions.
-  Social influences :  It is easy to overindulge because food is available or even because everyone is eating. One may overeat in social situations out of nervousness. Watch it when you are in social gatherings  that you do not overeat .
- Child hood habits :  Habits from childhood into adulthood  example excessive eating of chocolates, taking of ice creams after school even when not hungry and so on can also trigger emotional eating when one is grown and most times, it is difficult to stop.

Solutions to curb Emotional Eating
 - Carry out daily exercise  : it can do wonders to your mood and a powerful stress reducer
 - Make time for Relaxation : At least 30minutes everyday to relax and unwind is not bad.
- Connect with others : Do not underestimate the importance of close relationships. Spending time with positive people helps your stress life

Emotional Hunger and Physical hunger

Emotional hunger can be termed as the consumption of large quantities of food in response to feelings instead of physical hunger. Experts have estimated that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. Food does more than fill our stomach it also satisfies feeling. But when you satisfy those feelings with nice food when your stomach is not growling or complaining and you are not feeling any sign of real hunger *PHYSICAL HUNGER* that's Emotional Hunger. This is one of the lead cause of Obesity.

How can you tell the difference Between Real Hunger and Emotional Hunger
-  Emotional hunger comes suddenly while physical hunger comes gradually.
-  Emotional hunger feels it needs to be satisfied instantly with the food you want  while physical hunger can wait. (Even me @drmandyy sometimes wait) But not everytime ooo.
-  Even when you are full, if you are eating to satisfy an emotional need, one is likely to continue eating While when you eat when hungry one is likely to stop when full.
-  Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Are you always emotionally hungry ? Check out my next updates on causes of Emotional hunger and positive tips on how to break free from Emotional hunger.

OverEating

Norm of eating even when one is not hungry is a very common trend in the western world. There is what we term "Bad eating habit" that one has to eat at every interval. People like that can never be full because they eat little at a time over a long period of time. This is one of the leading factors of obesity or weight gain .The little foods that we consider normal do the more harm than good.  These takes us to two important notions. ( Emotional Eating and Physical Eating). You need to know the difference between these. Find out in my next update.
